Following Whitefield's Example
Whitefield's Pen
Arnold Dallimore's biography of George Whitefield is by far the best biography I've ever read. If you haven't read it then I commend it to you wholeheartedly. Many know Whitefield as one of the founders of Methodism. He was much more than that. He was also a missionary to colonial America where he was a traveling evangelist. On his trips to America he kept journals of his ministry that he sent back to England for publication. You might say he was an avid writer of support letters. I'm going to follow in Whitefield's example and try to update you with shorter and more frequent updates on the work here in Culpeper. My hope is that these updates will encourage you to pray and keep you informed on how your contributions to this work are extending the kingdom of God. The more theologically informed among you are saying right now, "I know George Whitefield, and you're no George Whitefield." I'm all to aware of that. But Whitefield's God is my God. And the land that Whitefield walked is the land that I walk. I'm working to see the kind of revival that Whitefield saw. It is my hope that these updates will serve to encourage you and enlist your prayers as you get an all too brief look into Christ Covenant Presbyterian Church, a church plant our God has started in Culpeper, VA. We've MovedWell, we're finally in our new home. We took advantage of the foreclosure market and bought a home that needed a healthy dose of rehabilitation. After a few weeks of a contractor's attention we moved in this last Saturday. The boxes are being steadily unpacked. Hallie is doing an amazing job of turning our house into a home. Pray for us as we finish up the move in process. Keep Praying for the Sale of our Home in MSOur home in MS is still on the market and waiting for its next owner. I know many of you have been praying for it to sell. Please don't stop praying. We're trying to be Calvinistic home owners—waiting on God's good and sovereign plan for the sale of our home. Pray for us not to grow discouraged as we wait on him. Finishing Up our Vision Series and Getting to Know LukeMy last sermon on our vision series is this coming Sunday night. I'll be preaching on the great commission, encouraging our people to think big thoughts about reaching the lost in Culpeper. After this series is over we'll begin a new series on the gospel of Luke. We'll take our time working through both Luke and Acts over the next few years. Our goal is to answer the question, "Who is Jesus and what is the church?" Luke gave the sum of his literary work to answering those two questions. And these are the two questions that a new church most needs to answer. Prayer- Pray for our group as we consider together how much God loves us through Christ.
- Pray for the sale of our home in MS.
- Pray for our group as we look towards an Easter launch.
- Pray for my preaching, that I would clearly articulate and apply the gospel.
Parting Quote
If your souls were not immortal, and you in danger of losing them, I would not thus speak unto you; but the love of your souls constrains me to speak: methinks this would constrain me to speak unto you forever.
-George Whitefield
